Mexican Teams
The roots of the Monterrey Football Club can be traced back to 1945, a difficult year full of crisis and war. On August 19th, at the Cuauhtémoc baseball field, they held their first match - defeating San Sebastian of Leon 1 to 0. In the beginning, the club did not have a nickname and fans called them different names. The names that stuck were “La Pandilla” (The Gang) and “Rayados” (Striped). From the former was created the team mascot, “El Pandy." The club did not enjoy much success its first decade; but in 1956 they once again defeated San Sebastian of Leon with a decisive goal by “Moro” Juárez for the title and their first ascent to First Division. On September 8th, 1991, the “albiazul” (white and blue) organization and their followers saw crystallized a dream that had heretofore only been a glimmer: Monterrey as Cup Champions after defeating the Cobras of Ciudad Juarez 4 to 2 inside a Tecnologico Stadium filled to capacity. Winning their first Cup Title in 1991, the Monterrey Football Club wrote their name in the Mexican Football Book of Champions. For the Rayados, this was the second Championship in their history (the first was the Torneo-Mexico of 1986). The night of June 14, 2003 will be forever remembered as the night in which the albiazules fans inundated the City of Monterrey with an outpouring of joy after seeing their club as Mexican First Division Champions for the second time in their history.
